The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impact of the flour milling industry, which is one of the leading and strategically important sectors of Ukraine’s agro-industrial complex. It is determined that the current development of the industry is accompanied by a number of environmental challenges caused both by technological characteristics of production and by the insufficient implementation of environmentally oriented solutions.
Main factors of negative environmental impact are analyzed, including the formation and dispersion of flour dust, which poses risks to the health of workers and populations in adjacent areas; noise pollution that reduces quality of life and working conditions; emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants into the atmosphere; excessive consumption of water and energy resources, which increases anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems; and the generation of significant volumes of waste, often without efficient recycling options. A review of recent scientific research on the greening of the food industry, particularly the flour milling sector, has been conducted, highlighting both positive trends and problematic aspects.
The unresolved issues include the lack of effective waste recycling technologies, limited application of renewable energy sources, and low integration of international environmental standards into the practices of Ukrainian enterprises. The article substantiates the necessity of introducing environmental management systems, innovative energy-saving technologies, logistics optimization, and the transition to the use of best available techniques (BAT). Promising directions for further research are outlined, including the assessment of the industry’s carbon footprint, digitalization of production processes, application of innovative air and water purification solutions, and the development of circular economy principles that focus on reusing waste as secondary resources.
Article concludes that modernization of flour mills, taking into account environmental priorities, is a crucial condition for reducing the negative impact of the industry on the environment and aligning Ukraine with international sustainable development standards.
