Abstract The current stage of Ukraine's economic development is characterized by the transition from an export-based economy to an innovative economy, one of the conceptual areas of which is modernization. It is established that in general the term "modernization" is synonymous with all kinds of progressive changes taking place in society. the notion of modernization is associated with a complex of social, political, economic, cultural and mental transformations that began in Western Europe in the sixteenth century. It is determined that any society on the way to the present must go through certain necessary stages of development. There is an evolutionary theory of modernization, according to which change is an inevitable natural process that can only be temporarily slowed down or stopped, the main question is to identify factors that hinder the growth of underdeveloped societies. Thus, the phenomenon of modernization is a spontaneous phenomenon that arises from below. Along with a bottom-up evolutionary approach to modernizing society, modernization was seen as a top-down process initiated and controlled by educated political elites who sought to bring their countries backward through conscious, planned action. As a rule, the most developed societies of the Western, capitalist world became the model they pursued. Such approaches, in our opinion, can be called rationalistic. The study of the basic theories of modernization allows us to systematize them into the following groups: economic, psychological, sociological, political and cultural. In addition, taking into account the latest trends in society and the orientation of mankind to sustainable development, we propose to highlight the environmental theory of modernization. Thus, the research allows us to conclude that modernization processes have always accompanied mankind. Modernization itself meant change, the main task of which was to facilitate human existence. The formation and development of social relations, and then the differentiation of the welfare of societies led to the evolution of the concept of modernization.
